Tree Felling & Sectional Dismantling Newcastle
Not every tree has room to fall in one piece. A lot of Newcastle’s gardens, particularly in older, tighter streets around Heaton, Byker, and Jesmond, simply don’t have the open space needed for a straightforward felling cut, and neither do most commercial and courtyard sites. In situations like that, the tree has to come down piece by piece, in a controlled, rigged descent rather than one single fall.
We carry out both standard felling and sectional dismantling across Newcastle and Northumberland, choosing the right method based on the tree, the site, and what’s around it.

Felling: when there’s room
Where a tree has clear space to fall into, directional felling is usually the most efficient method. We assess the tree’s lean, weight distribution, and the direction we want it to go, then make a controlled cut that guides it down along that line. This is generally quicker and more cost-effective than sectional work, and it’s the right choice for trees in open gardens, fields, or larger plots with no buildings, boundaries, or overhead lines in the fall zone.

Sectional dismantling: confined spaces
Where there’s a building close by, a boundary fence, a greenhouse, power lines, or simply not enough clear space, felling the whole tree in one go isn’t an option. Instead, we dismantle the tree from the top down, removing it piece by piece using rope access and rigging equipment to lower each section under control rather than letting it drop freely.
This is a genuinely different skill set from open felling. It requires careful planning of each cut, the right rigging points, and constant awareness of load and swing as sections come down, all while working at height in a tree that’s often leaning, decayed, or otherwise compromised, which is usually part of why it’s coming down in the first place.
We use this method regularly across Newcastle’s terraced streets and courtyard gardens, where a tree might be growing within a few feet of a house wall, a neighbour’s fence, or a conservatory roof, and there’s simply no room for error.

Working near buildings, boundaries, and services
Before any felling or dismantling job, we walk the site and identify everything in range: fences, sheds, greenhouses, power and telecoms lines, drains, and neighbouring property. Where overhead cables are involved, we coordinate carefully around them rather than working blind, and where a neighbouring garden is involved, we’ll talk you through any access or timing that needs agreeing with them in advance.
For trees that are already leaning, split, or structurally compromised, which is a common reason sectional dismantling is needed in the first place, we plan the whole sequence of cuts before starting, rather than working it out tree-side as we go.
- 04
Clearing up afterwards
Once a tree’s down, whether felled or dismantled, we clear the timber and brash from site as standard, leaving the garden tidy. If you’d like some or all of the wood left as logs or the brash chipped for mulch, just say so before the job starts, we’re always glad to leave usable material behind rather than take it away for the sake of it.
Stump grinding is a separate service from felling itself, we’ll quote that alongside the job if you’d like the stump gone too.

Checking for protected trees
As with any tree work, we check whether a tree carries a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area before quoting, since a lot of the more established trees needing sectional dismantling, older, larger specimens close to period properties, are exactly the kind that tend to be protected. If consent or a conservation area notice is needed, we handle that process as part of the job.

Equipment and technique
Sectional dismantling relies on rope access and rigging rather than ground-based machinery, since the whole point is precise, controlled placement of each section rather than a straightforward drop. That typically means climbers working in the tree itself, rigging points set up to take the load of each cut section, and a ground team managing ropes and lowering equipment to bring pieces down exactly where intended, often directly onto a tarpaulin or protected area rather than open ground.
For particularly large or heavy sections, we may use a crane or specialist lifting equipment where the site allows for it, which can speed up a job that would otherwise take considerably longer piece by piece. We’ll advise on this at the quoting stage if it’s likely to apply to your tree.
- 07
A team approach
This kind of work isn’t a one-person job. It needs a climber trained and experienced in rigging, a ground team coordinating ropes and managing the fall zone, and clear communication throughout, since a miscommunication on timing or load is exactly how accidents happen. Our crews work together regularly, which matters more on confined-space jobs than almost any other type of tree work.
- 08
What it costs
Sectional dismantling generally costs more than open felling for a comparable tree, since it takes considerably longer, requires more equipment, and involves a more experienced crew working at height throughout. We assess access, the tree’s condition, and what’s around it before giving a clear, agreed quote, so you know the full cost before anything starts.

FAQs
- How do you get a tree down if it’s right next to my house?
- Through sectional dismantling: taking the tree apart from the top down in controlled sections, lowered with rigging rather than felled in one piece.
- Does sectional dismantling cost more than normal felling?
- Generally, yes, since it takes considerably longer and needs more equipment and a more experienced crew. We’ll always explain why a particular method is needed for your tree.
- Can you work near power lines?
- We assess this on every job and plan around any overhead services in range. For trees very close to live cables, this may need to be coordinated with the network operator.
- Will you clear all the wood away?
- By default, yes. Let us know if you’d like logs or woodchip left behind instead.
