Hedge cutting timing matters more than most people realise. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it’s an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the active nest of a wild bird, and since a huge number of garden birds nest in hedges, that effectively rules out major hedge work during the main nesting season, generally taken as March to the end of August. We schedule routine and larger hedge jobs outside this window wherever we can, and where work is genuinely needed during nesting season, we check carefully for active nests before cutting anything.

For evergreen hedges over two metres tall, particularly conifers like leylandii, it’s also worth being aware of the High Hedges Act (part of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003), which gives neighbours a formal route to complain to the council if a hedge is unreasonably blocking their light. Keeping a tall evergreen hedge on a sensible maintenance cycle is generally the easiest way to avoid this becoming an issue in the first place.

A hedge cut badly, too hard, at the wrong time of year, or without any real plan for its long-term shape, can end up looking worse than before it was touched, or take years to recover from a heavy-handed cutback that a slightly different approach would have avoided entirely. We prune with the long-term health and shape of the hedge in mind on every job, not just how quick a tidy-up we can manage in an afternoon.

A lot of Newcastle’s hedges sit right along a boundary with limited access from one side, a wall, a fence, or a neighbour’s garden making it awkward to reach the far face. We assess access as part of any quote and, where a hedge can only be reached from one side, we’ll let you know honestly what that means for the finish and whether coordinating with a neighbour would give a better result.

For larger rural boundary hedges, particularly out towards Ponteland, Morpeth, and the wider Northumberland countryside, we can bring appropriate machinery to speed up longer runs of hedging, rather than relying purely on hand tools for a job that would otherwise take considerably longer.
