What tree surgery actually covers
“Tree surgery” is a broad term, and it’s worth breaking down because the right job for your tree depends entirely on what it needs.
Some trees need to come down altogether, whether that’s because they’re dead, diseased, structurally unsound, or simply in the wrong place for a building project. Others just need shaping: a crown reduction to bring the height down, crown lifting to clear a path or driveway, or crown thinning to let more light through without changing the tree’s overall size. Deadwooding removes dead or dying branches before they become a hazard. Pollarding keeps fast-growing species like willow or lime under control over the long term.
Then there’s the aftercare: stump grinding once a tree’s gone, root management if roots are lifting a patio or getting too close to foundations, and ongoing pest and disease monitoring for trees you want to keep healthy for years to come.

Why it needs a professional
Tree work looks straightforward from the ground. It rarely is. A tree that’s leaning, split, or growing near power lines, a boundary fence, or a conservatory roof needs someone who can read what’s actually going on structurally before a chainsaw goes anywhere near it. Get it wrong and you’re looking at damage to property, a trip to A&E, or a tree that dies slowly over the following two years because it was cut back too hard in the wrong place at the wrong time of year.

Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas
A good number of the streets we work on across Newcastle, from Jesmond and Gosforth through to Ponteland and Darras Hall, sit within conservation areas, and plenty of individual trees carry a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) whether the homeowner realises it or not.
If a tree has a TPO, you need written consent from the council before any work takes place, and unauthorised work is a criminal offence that can carry fines running into the tens of thousands of pounds. If your property is in a conservation area and the tree isn’t already TPO-protected, you still need to give the council six weeks’ written notice before starting work on anything with a trunk over 75mm in diameter, measured at 1.5 metres up. That notice period gives the council a chance to decide whether to place an order on the tree before you touch it.
