Stump Grinding Newcastle
A tree stump left in a lawn or border rarely stays out of the way. It trips people up, gets in the way of mowing, sends up suckering regrowth for years, and slowly rots in place, sometimes attracting fungus and pests you’d rather not have near the house. We grind stumps out properly across Newcastle and Northumberland, whether it’s one left from a tree we’ve just taken down or one that’s been sitting in the garden for years from work done long before we ever arrived.

How stump grinding works
A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump down into wood chip, working below ground level rather than just flush with the surface. We typically grind stumps to a depth of around 20 to 30cm below soil level, deep enough that you can turf, plant, or lay a patio over the area afterwards without the stump getting in the way.
The wood chip produced during grinding is a genuinely useful by-product. We’re happy to leave it on site as mulch for your borders, or take it away if you’d rather have a clean finish with just soil left behind.

Stumps left from old removals
Plenty of the stump grinding jobs we do across Newcastle aren’t from trees we’ve removed ourselves. They’re stumps that have been sitting for years, sometimes decades, left over from a previous removal, a storm-felled tree, or work carried out by someone else entirely. Age doesn’t make grinding any harder in most cases, and it’s often more straightforward than a fresh stump since the wood has softened.

Why grinding beats digging out
Digging a stump out by hand or with an excavator means removing the whole root system, which can mean substantial excavation, disturbance to surrounding paving, fences, or drains, and a much bigger mess to clear up afterwards. Grinding avoids most of that. We work around existing paving, walls, and structures with far less disruption, and the smaller access needed means we can get into most back gardens without needing to bring heavy plant through the house or over a neighbour’s property.
For very large stumps close to buildings, or where full root removal is genuinely necessary (ahead of an extension, for example), digging out may still be the right call, and we’ll advise honestly if grinding isn’t the best option for your situation.
- 04
Multiple stumps and site clearance
If you’re clearing several stumps at once, whether that’s from an overgrown garden, a plot being cleared for building work, or a commercial site, we can quote for the whole job together. This often works out more cost-effective than treating each stump as a separate visit. See our site and scrub clearance page if you’re clearing a larger area ahead of construction.

Stumps near paving, walls, and services
Stumps sitting close to a driveway, a boundary wall, or underground services need a bit more care than one in an open lawn. We check for nearby drains, cabling, and structures before grinding, and adjust depth and technique so we don’t damage anything close by. This is a common situation across older Newcastle properties in Gosforth and Jesmond, where mature trees were often planted right up against a boundary or a path decades ago, long before anyone thought about what the roots and stump would mean for future work.
If a stump sits directly under a proposed extension or new driveway, it’s worth checking whether full excavation, rather than grinding, is actually needed for the groundwork. We’ll advise honestly on which is the right approach for your project.

Access for the grinder
Stump grinders vary in size, and getting the right one to the stump matters. Smaller, more manoeuvrable grinders can get through standard garden gates and narrow side access, which covers the vast majority of domestic gardens we work in. For stumps in more awkward positions, behind existing landscaping, up steps, or in a walled courtyard, we’ll assess access as part of the quote and let you know if anything needs moving or protecting before we start.
- 07
What it costs
Pricing depends on the diameter of the stump, its species (some woods are considerably harder than others), and how many stumps need doing in one visit. Access matters too: a stump in an open front garden is a quicker job than one tucked behind a shed with a narrow side gate. We give a clear, agreed price before starting, with nothing added afterwards.
- 08
Timing and aftercare
Grinding can generally be carried out at any time of year, since it’s not affected by the same seasonal considerations as pruning or felling. Once ground out and backfilled, the area will need a few weeks to settle before turfing or heavy planting, particularly if a significant volume of wood chip and soil has been used to fill the hole. For anyone wanting to relay a patio or driveway over the site, we’d recommend allowing enough time for settlement first, or compacting the backfill properly, to avoid an uneven surface later on.

FAQs
- Can you grind a stump that’s years old?
- Yes, age generally makes no difference, and older wood is often easier to grind than freshly cut timber.
- Will grinding remove all the roots?
- Grinding removes the stump and the main root flare below ground level, but it won’t take out every root running out under the lawn. Those will naturally rot down over time and won’t regrow once the stump itself is gone.
- Can I plant or turf straight over the ground area?
- Once the hole’s been backfilled, yes. We can leave the area ready for turf or planting, or backfill with topsoil if you’d prefer to do that part yourself.
- Do you take the wood chip away?
- Either way, whichever suits you. Plenty of customers keep it for mulch, we’re happy to take it if you’d rather have it cleared.
