Most garden fences don’t need planning permission, but there are limits worth knowing: generally up to 2 metres for side and rear boundaries, dropping to 1 metre for anything next to a road or path used by vehicles. Conservation areas and listed properties can carry tighter restrictions again. We’ll flag it if your project is likely to need permission before we start, rather than let you find out after the fence is up.

It’s a common myth that the fence on your right (or left) is automatically “yours” to maintain. There’s no such universal rule in England, ownership and maintenance responsibility depend on what’s actually recorded in the property’s title deeds, and it varies property to property. If you’re not sure who’s responsible for a boundary you’re looking to replace, it’s worth checking your deeds, or simply having a conversation with your neighbour, before committing to work.
