Re-turfing involves stripping back the existing lawn, addressing whatever caused it to fail in the first place where possible (compaction, poor drainage, heavy shade), and laying fresh turf on properly prepared ground.

Turf laid on poorly prepared ground can look fine for the first few weeks and then fail: uneven settling, poor drainage leading to waterlogged patches, or roots struggling to establish in compacted or poor-quality soil underneath. Some gardens, particularly those on heavier clay soils common in parts of Newcastle and Northumberland, hold water more than others.
