Hedge Trimming & Shaping Newcastle

Most hedge work isn’t dramatic. It’s routine trimming and shaping, keeping a hedge at the height and width you actually want it, with clean, even lines rather than the lumpy, uneven finish you get from a strimmer taken to it once a year. We carry out hedge trimming and shaping across Newcastle and Northumberland, for one-off tidy-ups and ongoing seasonal maintenance alike.

    Routine trimming

Regular trimming keeps a hedge dense, healthy, and looking deliberate rather than accidental. For most common hedging species (privet, beech, hawthorn, laurel, box), one to two trims a year is usually enough to keep growth in check, though faster-growing species like leylandii can need more frequent attention to stop them getting away from you.

We cut to a level, consistent line, tapering the sides slightly where appropriate (wider at the base than the top) so light reaches the lower part of the hedge and it stays thick and green all the way down rather than going bare and leggy underneath, which is one of the most common problems we see on hedges that have only ever been cut flat-sided.

  2. 02

    Height and width reduction

If a hedge has crept up over the years, or simply needs bringing back to a more manageable size, we can reduce both height and width as part of the same visit. How hard a hedge can be cut back in one go depends on the species: some tolerate a significant reduction without issue, while others (many conifers in particular) will not regrow from old, bare wood if cut back too hard, leaving permanent brown patches. We’ll advise honestly on how much your hedge can take in one visit, and where a bigger reduction needs staging over a couple of seasons to avoid damaging it.

  3. 03

    Getting the shape right

A well-trimmed hedge should have a slight batter, narrower at the top than the base, which helps rainfall and light reach the whole plant and reduces the risk of snow or heavy rain splaying the top open in winter. We shape to this as standard on formal hedges, and can advise on the right profile for informal or mixed native hedging too, where a stricter geometric shape usually isn’t the goal.

  4. 04

    Boundary hedges and neighbours

Where a hedge sits on or near a boundary, we’re mindful of cutting only what’s yours to cut. If you’d like a boundary hedge trimmed on both sides, we’re happy to coordinate with a neighbour directly if that makes the job easier, rather than leaving one side untouched.

  5. 05

    Timing

We schedule routine trims outside the main bird nesting season (broadly March to August) wherever the job allows, checking for active nests before cutting if timing means work has to happen during that window. For most hedges, an autumn or early spring trim works well and keeps things looking sharp through the year.

  6. 06

    Clearing up

All cuttings and clippings are cleared from site as standard, so you’re left with a tidy hedge and a tidy garden, not a pile of trimmings on the lawn.

  7. 07

    Mixed and informal hedges

Not every hedge needs a crisp, formal line. Mixed native hedges, common on rural and semi-rural boundaries across Northumberland, are often better suited to a looser, more informal trim that keeps growth in check without forcing a rigid geometric shape onto what’s naturally a more relaxed style of planting. We’ll match the finish to the style of hedge and the look you’re actually going for, rather than apply the same formal cut to everything.

  8. 08

    Common problems we fix

A lot of the hedges we’re called out to trim have developed problems from previous cutting: growth that’s gone bare and leggy at the base from years of only being cut flat-sided, an uneven or wavy top line from being cut freehand without a guide, or one side noticeably thicker than the other from inconsistent access. We correct these issues where we can as part of a routine visit, though more significant problems, like a badly bare base, may need the staged approach covered on our Overgrown Hedge Reclamation page rather than a quick fix during a standard trim.

  9. 09

    Ongoing maintenance

If you’d rather not think about it every year, we offer scheduled hedge maintenance as part of our garden maintenance contracts, so your hedge gets trimmed on a set cycle without you needing to remember to book it. See our Grounds Maintenance Contracts page for more on this if you’re a business or larger property, or just ask about a recurring domestic visit.

  10. 10

    What it costs

Pricing depends on the length and height of the hedge, the species, and how much reduction (if any) is needed alongside the trim. We give a clear, agreed price before starting, with no hidden extras.

04Common questions

FAQs

How often should a hedge be trimmed?
Most common hedging species need one to two trims a year. Faster-growing species like leylandii may need more frequent attention.
Can you reduce the height of my hedge significantly in one visit?
Depends on the species. Some hedges tolerate a hard cutback fine, others need the reduction staged over a couple of seasons to avoid permanent bare patches. We’ll advise on your specific hedge.
Will you take cuttings away?
Yes, clearing up is included as standard.
Can I set up a regular trimming schedule rather than book each time?
Yes, we’re happy to set up a seasonal or annual maintenance cycle so it’s one less thing to remember.
