Lawn Mowing & Lawn Care Newcastle

A lawn is the part of the garden that shows neglect fastest, and looks after itself least. A couple of weeks without a cut and it’s noticeably shaggy; a season without proper care and moss, thatch, and bare patches start creeping in. We provide lawn mowing and wider lawn care across Newcastle and Northumberland, from a single cut to a full seasonal care programme.

  1. 01

    Regular mowing

Routine mowing is the foundation of a decent lawn, cut too infrequently or too short and the grass struggles; cut consistently at the right height and it stays thick, green, and better able to crowd out moss and weeds on its own. We offer one-off cuts and regular scheduled visits, weekly or fortnightly through the growing season, tapering off as growth slows into autumn and winter.

  2. 02

    Edging

A freshly mown lawn with scruffy, overgrown edges along the borders or paving still looks unfinished. We tidy edges as part of a standard mowing visit, cutting a crisp, defined line where the lawn meets a border, path, or driveway, which makes a bigger visual difference than people often expect for a relatively small extra step.

  3. 03

    Scarification

Over time, lawns build up a layer of thatch, dead grass, moss, and organic debris that sits at soil level and stops water, air, and nutrients reaching the roots properly. Scarification removes this layer using a mechanical rake or scarifying machine, pulling out thatch and moss and leaving the lawn looking considerably worse for a week or two before it recovers thicker and healthier than before. It’s typically carried out once a year, most commonly in early autumn when the grass has good recovery time left before winter.

  4. 04

    Aeration

Aeration involves spiking or coring the lawn to relieve soil compaction, letting air, water, and nutrients penetrate down to the root zone more effectively. Compacted soil is a common problem on lawns that get regular foot traffic, particularly smaller gardens or areas near a patio or back door, and aeration is one of the more effective ways to improve a lawn’s health without digging it up and starting again. It’s often carried out alongside scarification in autumn, or in spring for lawns that need it more urgently.

  5. 05

    Getting the height right

Cutting a lawn too short is one of the most common causes of a poor-looking lawn, weakening the grass, exposing soil to weeds and moss, and making it more vulnerable to drought stress in dry spells. We cut to a height suited to the grass type and time of year, generally leaving lawns slightly longer during hot or dry periods to help them cope, rather than scalping every lawn to the same short length regardless of conditions.

  6. 06

    Clippings: leave or collect

Grass clippings can either be collected and removed or left to break down on the lawn, each has trade-offs. Collecting gives a neater, more immediate finish and avoids a build-up of clippings smothering the grass if cutting is infrequent. Leaving fine clippings on a regularly mown lawn can return some nutrients to the soil, though it’s less suitable if the lawn is being cut less often or the grass is notably long. We’ll advise on what suits your lawn and cutting frequency.

  7. 07

    Dealing with moss

Moss tends to move into lawns that are compacted, poorly drained, sitting in shade, or simply not getting enough light and air movement at soil level, which describes a fair number of gardens across Newcastle’s older, more established streets with mature trees and high fences. Scarification and aeration both help address the underlying conditions that let moss take hold, and we can advise on further steps, improving drainage, addressing shade where practical, if moss keeps coming back despite regular treatment.

  8. 08

    Overseeding and bare patches

Lawns that have thinned out, from heavy use, scarification, or simple wear and tear, often benefit from overseeding: sowing fresh grass seed into the existing lawn to thicken it up rather than starting from scratch. We can advise on this as part of a wider lawn care programme, typically timed for spring or early autumn when seed germinates most reliably.

  9. 09

    First cuts on neglected lawns

If a lawn has been left to grow long, sometimes considerably longer than “overdue for a mow,” it usually needs a careful, staged approach rather than one aggressive cut straight down to a normal height, since scalping an overgrown lawn in one go can shock and damage the grass. We assess the lawn and, where needed, take it down gradually over a couple of visits to avoid this.

  10. 10

    Setting up a regular schedule

Most lawns look their best on a consistent cutting schedule through the growing season (roughly March to October in the North East, weather dependent) rather than occasional catch-up visits. We’re happy to set up a regular arrangement, weekly, fortnightly, or to suit your garden, so mowing is one less thing to think about.

  11. 11

    What it costs

Pricing depends on the size of the lawn, how often you’d like it cut, and whether scarification or aeration is wanted alongside routine mowing. Regular scheduled visits typically work out more cost-effective per cut than booking one-off visits. We give a clear, agreed quote before starting.

FAQs

How often should a lawn be mowed?
Weekly to fortnightly through the growing season is typical, tapering off as growth slows in autumn and winter.
What’s the difference between scarification and aeration?
Scarification removes thatch and moss from the surface. Aeration relieves soil compaction below it. Many lawns benefit from both, often carried out together in autumn.
My lawn has a lot of moss, will scarifying fix it?
It helps significantly, but if the underlying cause (shade, compaction, poor drainage) isn’t addressed, moss will tend to return. We can advise on the best combination of treatment for your lawn.
Can you cut a lawn that’s badly overgrown?
Yes, though very long grass is usually taken down gradually over more than one visit to avoid shocking or damaging it.
